And the wolves changed the behavior of the river

Rebecca and Tushrik

Elena Angelova

Hardly there is more proper title for the dance piece “Residuals”. It brings contemporary dance in dream-like reality, in fragments of torn to pieces, disharmonic narrative. We are brought to residuals from intense experiences, residuals of realizing social dominants, residuals from nightmares and reality.
And we have no other choice, but to experience them.

The experience in “Residuals” is at the same time main act for the performers and for the audience. For the conscious of the viewer the engagement in the intensive performing act is inevitable. At some moments he is tormented by the tension from the sound design and the discomfort in the performers’ movements. Rebecca Margolik and Tushrik Fredericks exist in created by Sidra Bell scenic world through dynamic changes of emotion nuances. In “Residuals” they go for exhausting journey to themselves, in which the goal is to discover new dimensions of reality, reaching finally to surreality.

In their first performance together on stage, Rebecca and Tushrik expand the notion of synchronous. In periodically repeated dance phrases they build synchronous as way of relationship, the choreography text was way of communication between two bodies. Through this they formed the sphere of performing space and filled it with their strong individual qualities. Dressed in light black clothes from see-through fabric, Rebecca and Tushrik looked like creatures from world of dreams, out of our physical dimension. Even though we didn’t understand what their superpowers are, we were definitely under their control.

A creator of scenic world, more than a choreographer, for second time Sidra Bell shares her way of work in Bulgaria. It differs with memorable and original movement language, which speaks with abstraction about concrete principals, truths, intuitions from world knowledge. In “Residuals” she unites the presence and the behavior of the dancers, the text, the sound design and the choreography in a dazzling stream of forces.
Even though “Residuals” was presented as an unfinished project, it states strong author approach in the work with the dancers, putting in front his and hers powerful performing resource.

And the wolves changed the behavior of the river (a quotation from the text in “Residuals”), just like Sidra, Rebecca and Tushrik changed the behavior of contemporary dance, the one that I know.
