For Derida Dance Center team 2015 was a year of lots of fruitful work, creation of new partnerships, reassertion of old ones, expansion of our art production activity and let’s not forget, it was a year of wonderful merrymaking.

Educational and training program Dance PORT Derida
Realized with the support of “America For Bulgaria” Foundation
Dance PORT Derida is in the heart of Derida Dance Center mission to support the development of contemporary dance in Bulgaria. For a 4th year in a roll the rehearsal studios were and still are full of hard-working young dance performers. We consider the IKAR Award 2015 nomination of the graduation performance of year 2014 of Dance PORT Derida called “Silent Weapon” as a huge success of the program. Also, the performance received the Award of Sofia Municipality for high achievements in the cultural field and we accept that as a recognition of the program good results so far.

Residency Program of Derida Dance Center

This year 15 artistic teams were hosted in Derida Dance Center. We provided studio time for rehearsals, technical equipment and presented the results of their author projects in front of audience. Hosting American choreographers in Bulgaria – Sidra Bell and Charles Slender

Within this collaboration the American choreographer Sidra Bell was our guest choreographer for a period of 3 weeks. She worked with the participants of Dance PORT Derida program and in the end the result of their work was presented in front of audience. For Dance PORT Derida participants the collaboration with Sidra Bell was valuable challenge and professional growth.
Meeting the choreographer from San Francisco – Charles Slender and working with him was also very fruitful and brought fresh ideas for future partnership.
Art Management in the Future Project
Realized with the support of Cultural Innovations Fund, operated by Sofia Development Association
We took a visionary approach towards this project and involved young art managers in the work of our team so that we could show them what how and why we do. These were not only internships but also very fruitful partnerships which enriched our team. Apart from the project, we hosted a wonderful intern from Latvia who came to Bulgaria thanks to Erasmus Program. Another event related to sharing our expertise is that in 2015 the management model of Derida Dance Center was chosen among 240 cases from all over the world and included as an example of successful cultural entrepreneurship in the postgraduate textbook “International Arts Entrepreneurship: Innovative Strategies and Cases” by the Canadian Publisher Routledge.The textbook will be distributed in 500 universities and libraries.
Platform Aerowaves – Dance Across Europe
Realized with the support of Creative Europe Program by EU and Culture Program of Sofia Municipality
Derida Dance Center is a part of the European Platform Aerowaves – Dance Across Europe since 2012. The Platform unites organizations from 33 counties whose collaboration supports young choreographers who are in a process of artistic development and receiving recognition. Since 2015 Derida Dance Center has the statute of Presenting Partner to Aerowaves. Thus, we started presenting annually in Bulgaria minimum 3 European performances which have received good critical acclaim within the Platform. In October 2016 our team will host Aerowaves Annual Partners Meeting and this event will gather in Sofia cultural agents, producers, marketing experts and festival directors from all over Europe. In 2018 Derida Dance Center together with Sofia Municipality will host one of the most prominent international events in the field of contemporary performing arts – the annual festival for contemporary dance and performance “Aerowaves Spring Forward”.

New Dance Into The New Venue Project
Realized with the support of Trust for Mutual Understanding and Movement Research
The project contained a range of events including contemporary dance performances, seminars and master classes and happened in Saldus, Latvia. Derida Dance Center takes part in the initiative through partnership with Movement Research and thanks to this cooperation DDC team made the Bulgarian participation in the festival possible.

ZenPlay – contemporary dance performance by Derida Dance

Zen Play is the newest contemporary dance performance by Derida Dance, created in 2015. The performing team consists not only of established company dancers but also of young professional dancers who successfully graduated Dance PORT Derida program in 2014. The provocation of the performance is strong and that can easily be seen in the feedback and reviews it has received so far. That is the pulse of our dance center – each pleasant activity created for you with the energy of our instructors and front desk officers. This year we expanded the palette of courses for you in order to provide richer choice.
