The first Bulgarian residency in Derida Dance Center for 2017 was held in the period 16.03- 05.04 – this was the screen dance project "Monomorph", a continuation of the long-term collaboration of the dancers Vladimir Gruev and Stephanie Handjiiska and the composer Georgi Atanasov.
Monomorph (math. an integer that can be expressed in only one way in an equation) is driven by the idea of merging space, motion and sound. The aim of the project is to create a short screendance miniature, exploring symmetry and harmony in the movement and sound environment. The team searches for the end point of the upward spiral development of the musical and choreographic phrase and the point of oscillation before the system de-balances. The subject of interest during the work is the challenge of working both indoors and outdoors in order to compare the impact the environment gives on the movement and its context.
Dancers Stephanie H. and Vladimir G. collaborate since 2015 in the short projects "SERIOUSITY" presented at the BODY_GRAPHICS 2016 festival and the screendance miniature "Red Garden".
Vladimir Gruev graduated from the University of Creative Arts in the UK. He does cinematic work, photography, break dance and contemporary dance. He performed in "Finding words" and "Inherent" choreographed by Si Rawlinson, presented at Resolutions 2016 and Breaking Convention 2016, 2017 in one of the most prestigious contemporary dance theaters in London - Saddler's Wells and The Place. In 2016, he made his director debut with the short film "Sun Sets on Sunday", which was featured at a number of screendance festivals around the world. He collaborates with companies such as “Wayward Thread”, “Atom Theatre” and “Man with a hat” on various visual and dance projects.
The composer Georgi Atanasov (Minstrell) studied music at the Lyubomir Pipkov NMU and later at the University of East Anglia where he studied digital music making, electroacoustics, sound design, development and use of interactive music systems. Since his return to Bulgaria in 2014 he finds full application of his musical approach as a composer for theater and contemporary dance and performance. The compositions of Georgi Atanasov can be heard in the theater performances "Masters" by Racho Stoyanov, "Nothing, the wild ant, Adam and Eve" by Malina Psheshluga, "Servantes, Shakespeare and Anton" by the director Stefan Prohorov and in the dance performances "Meeting for a dream"(Stephanie Handjiiska, Stefan Prohorov),"TheTimeStopper " and " Ion (play for the adopted) "by Stephanie Handjiiska.
Stephanie Handjiiska is a performer and choreographer in the field of contemporary dance and performance. Author of the performances "Ion (play for the adopted)", "TheTimeStopper" and " Meeting for a dream " (collaboration with the director Stefan Prokhorov). As a performer she works with Derida Dance Company (“F63.9”, “Metronome”), Arabesque Ballet, Krasen Krastev, Documentary Theater Studio VOX POPULI and others. Stephanie Handjiiska and Georgi Atanasov established 'Man with a Hat' together with director Stefan Prohorov in 2016. Together, they form a multidisciplinary artistic team that is behind performances such as "Ion (play for the adopted)" (art-doc platform V/HOD), "TheTimeStopper" (Stage “Derida” and art-doc platform in V/HOD), "Meeting for a dream“ (The Russian Cultural Center), “The Circle” (Municipal Theater "Lubomir Kabakchiev" Kazanlak), "Servantes, Shakespeare and Anton" (Servantes Institute in Sofia), "Nothing, the wild ant, Adam and Eve" (Puppet Theater Stara Zagora) and others.
